Whether you’re a provost steering a university through change, a dean shaping the future of your college, or a program director building something new, the challenge is often similar: how do you bring people together so they leave genuinely engaged, not just informed? We design strategies and events that make that happen and steer your institution towards the change you seek.

you might be here because:

  • You’re planning a summit, convening, or all-hands and don’t want it to be another room of passive presentations
  • The people you bring together are craving genuine belonging and engagement, not just more programming
  • You’re preparing to develop your next strategic plan, and in the past, people haven’t felt real ownership over it
  • A major transition (enrollment, AI, leadership) is underway and you need a process people genuinely feel excited about

There’s a different way to bring a campus together

Most gatherings and plans in higher ed are built around delivery — someone presents, everyone else receives. We build around participation instead, whether the goal is a single powerful event or a multi-year strategy.

  • People as contributors. The faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in the room help shape what happens so they leave invested, not just informed.
  • Designed for what’s real. Hard conversations, deep disagreement, uncertainty about AI or the future– we design experiences that can hold all of it, rather than talk around it.

The result isn’t just a better event or a stronger plan. It’s people who understand where things are going, believe in it, and are ready to carry it forward.

Trusted by universities around the world

“Spud's level of facilitation was next level! I've experienced good and bad facilitation over the years — and Spud was at the top of the charts for what a facilitator is capable of unlocking. He was instrumental to the success of our Imagination Summit!”
Dr. Larry Terry
Vice President, Penn State Outreach
“Spud re-invigorated our social entrepreneurship program. He revolutionized our retreats by working tirelessly to reach students and coordinate facilitators. Our programming would not be at its current level without the guidance of Spud.”
Steve McDavid
President, Sullivan Foundation
“Spud is incredibly creative, hardworking, and inspiring. His partnership brought more than just the professional skill of building entrepreneurial communities; he fostered a community in Mississippi of changemakers, retaining young talent. It's a privilege to work alongside him.”

Penn State Outreach

Transforming University Outreach Efforts through a Collaborative Strategic Planning Process

How do you get 200+ outreach professionals scattered across campuses and colleges to stop working in silos and start building the university’s future together?

Penn State Outreach wanted its one-day Imagination Summit to spark real collaboration across a community that usually works in silos. We designed an interactive process then kept the energy alive with a year of virtual follow-on sessions feeding the organization’s strategic plan.

The result: 200+ professionals generated 30 concrete collaborative initiatives (several launched immediately), and the momentum flowed straight into a co-created strategic plan — moving Outreach, in its VP’s words, “from silos to synergy.”

Sullivan Foundation

A Decade Powering Social Innovation Programming Across 70+ Universities

How do you turn a foundation’s endowment and a 70-university network into programming that genuinely changes students’ lives and keep it thriving for a decade?

The Sullivan Foundation funds social-impact learning for young changemakers at 70+ universities across the American Southeast. The challenge is that a network that large only creates impact if the programming behind it is meaningfully designed, coordinated, and constantly renewed. For 10+ years, we ran that engine: Ignite Retreats, fellowships, field trips, a virtual Masterclass series, faculty development, coaching cohorts, and a rebrand, all while advising the president and board on the foundation’s future.

The result: 5,000+ students trained, 250+ faculty developed, a $17M endowment re-aligned toward student success, and a program its president says “would not be at its current level” without us.

Teach for America Graduate Fellows Program

Building a Changemaker Fellowship That Kept Young Talent in Rural Mississippi

How do you keep talented young teachers in rural Mississippi and turn them into the community entrepreneurs those towns need?

The Teach for America Graduate Fellows Program set out to keep TFA alumni in rural Mississippi by helping them launch community ventures where they’d taught. In the program’s first years, we designed and facilitated the whole fellowship experience, including designing a year-long curriculum, multiple 3-day immersion retreats, monthly virtual cohorts, and a nationwide mentor network, all while capturing the impact metrics that fueled its fundraising.

The result: a fellowship that retained young talent in Mississippi and helped fellows raise significant funding for social-entrepreneurship and economic-development projects across the state.

Stop hosting things people sit through.

Design experiences they co-create.

faq

Strategic planning for universities is the process of building shared institutional direction across a complex, multi-unit organization with shared governance. It involves bringing faculty, administrators, students, and external stakeholders into genuine dialogue — not just presenting a plan for their reaction. Through Community-Guided Strategic Planning, My Creative Community treats shared governance as the mechanism by which institutional strategy becomes legitimate, not an obstacle to overcome.
A strategic planning facilitator designs and leads the process by which an institution develops its own strategy — rather than handing over a finished plan. That means structuring stakeholder dialogue, surfacing tensions, and translating participation into clear priorities faculty and staff recognize as their own. My Creative Community has facilitated strategic planning for universities, colleges, and multi-campus systems navigating enrollment shifts, AI disruption, and major institutional transitions.
Facilitation for a university summit means designing the gathering around participant contribution rather than content delivery — replacing back-to-back presentations with structured dialogue, peer learning, and visible synthesis. As a conference facilitator for higher education, My Creative Community has led university-wide summits that generated concrete collaborative initiatives and fed directly into institutional strategy.
Yes. We design and facilitate retreats and leadership offsites for university leadership, colleges, departments, and foundations. As a retreat facilitator, our focus is on building trust, surfacing real challenges, and helping teams leave with shared direction and concrete next steps — not just a pleasant day away from campus.
Yes. We design participatory workshops and decision-making processes that help universities move past anxious AI conversations into concrete, collaborative action — building shared understanding across faculty and staff rather than imposing a top-down technology mandate.
Yes. Much of our work is at the college, program, and center level — deans, honors college leaders, leadership academy and incubator directors, and student-life teams who bring us in to design a specific event, launch or reshape a program, or facilitate a gathering for their community. You don’t need an institution-wide mandate to work with us; you just need a group of people you want to genuinely engage.
Both. Plenty of our higher-ed work is standalone events with no strategic-planning attached — dialogue gatherings across deep disagreement, student innovation experiences, belonging and engagement series, and one-time convenings. We design each around participation so people leave having contributed, not just attended.
