Facilitation & Strategic Planning for Coalitions & Networks

A coalition is a paradox: its power comes from many independent organizations, and so does its difficulty. Everyone shares a cause, but no one is in charge. The work only adds up to something bigger if those organizations can find shared direction and move together. We design strategies and events that turn a roomful of independent partners into a coordinated effort.

you might be here because:

  • Your coalition shares a cause, but members are pulling in different directions
  • Everyone is doing good work, but there’s no framework to measure collective impact
  • A network needs renewed energy and alignment, not just another annual meeting
  • Funding is shifting and you need a sustainable path forward everyone believes in
  • A plan exists on paper, but the partners who have to carry it don’t feel ownership of it

There’s a different way to align a coalition

Most coalition meetings are built around updates where each organization reports out, and little changes. We build them around genuine alignment, because in a network, direction has to be co-created. Two things turn a coalition into more than the sum of its members, and our work builds both at once:

  • A shared strategic direction members helped shape. The organizations that make up the coalition co-create its priorities from the start. This ensures the strategy has roots across the whole network, not just sign-off from a steering committee.
  • A connected community of practice. The same gatherings build the relationships and trust that hold a coalition together — turning a scattered field of members into a network that keeps learning from each other and acting together long after the convening ends.

The result isn’t just a better meeting or a cleaner plan. It’s a coalition whose many independent parts move toward collective impact together.

“I would 100% work with Spud in the future; in fact… I don't think I would work with anyone else! He gave me such fantastic support and advice. I couldn't stop smiling because he was able to take my vision and amplify it even further!”
Lori Murphy
Social Worker and VA Innovation Fellow
“We are so appreciative of Spud's help in guiding our conversations and keeping us focused throughout the process — especially since this work involves so many disparate institutions.”
Jill Morris
Executive Director of Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation
“We had ideas but nothing concrete. Spud does a great job to organize those ideas and put thoughts into motion. Thanks to his help, we got the end result that we were hoping for and felt really proud of what we hosted. We would absolutely do it again!”

Pennsylvania Statewide STEM Ecosystem (PSSE)

Aligning STEM Ecosystems Across an Entire State

How do you get a statewide network of scattered STEM ecosystems to finally move as one?

PSSE brought us in, year after year, to design and facilitate the retreats, leadership training, and statewide gatherings that hold a volunteer-powered coalition together. We ran multi-day leadership retreats, an ambassador-style program training the leaders who run each region, and a steady rhythm of in-person convenings to align their statewide plan.

The result: a scattered set of regional efforts turned into a coordinated statewide movement with shared language, a governance structure it built itself, and a network that keeps moving as one between gatherings.

DegenSTEAM

Helping DegenSTEAM Turn Community Conversations into Collective Action

How do you bring community leaders together to think differently, build trust, and discover what they can accomplish together?

With a vision of “Once Again Driven by STEAM,” DegenSTEAM was building a community-driven approach to strengthening opportunities across Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna Valley. Through four co-designed Innovation Rooms and Sense-Makers Gatherings, we helped create engaging experiences where regional leaders could share perspectives, identify priorities, and discover new possibilities for collaboration.

The result: stronger relationships, shared learning, and community insights that continue to inform DegenSTEAM’s evolving work.

The Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement

Turning a Local News-and-Information Ecosystem into Ideas the Community Will Champion

After spending months mapping a region’s news ecosystem, how do you turn all that data into real ideas the community actually wants to shape, fund, and lead?

The Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement had spent five months mapping the news-and-information ecosystem of their region — legacy news sources, emerging informal channels, and what community members actually want from local information. The hard part was what came next: turning that study into concrete ideas the community would rally behind. We designed and facilitated a 200-person Pro-Action Café — called the “Informed & Engaged” gathering — that reflected the findings back to community partners, shaped the data into a handful of tangible ideas, and recruited hosts to champion each one.

The result: the room left energized with a prioritized, community-backed slate of ideas to guide the Institute’s next year of grant investments.

Let’s talk about your coalition or network, and what it would take to turn shared intentions into coordinated, collective impact.

faq

Strategic planning for a coalition is the work of helping many independent organizations — who share a cause but not a chain of command — align around common goals, a shared framework, and a way to measure collective impact. Because no single member can direct the others, the plan has to be genuinely co-created. My Creative Community designs participatory, Community-Guided Strategic Planning processes where members across the network help shape the direction, so the strategy earns real buy-in rather than sitting with a steering committee.
We design the gatherings and processes that turn parallel efforts into a coordinated whole: stakeholder convenings that surface shared priorities, task-force work that distills input into a clear direction, and frameworks that give everyone a common language and shared measures of progress. The goal is collective impact — many organizations contributing to outcomes none could achieve alone.
Yes. Several of our coalition engagements have centered on exactly this — helping networks facing the end of a grant cycle figure out what’s most worth sustaining and chart a viable path forward. For both ALPA and PA Digital, we guided statewide library coalitions through stakeholder-informed planning that produced member-built roadmaps for sustaining their most valuable work through funding change.
Yes. We design and facilitate stakeholder convenings — in person and virtual — that bring large, diverse networks into genuine dialogue. For PA Digital, that included a Stakeholder Discovery Gathering with 100+ partners from across the state. Our facilitation is built to help organizations that don’t normally work together find common ground and shared direction.

We work with statewide coalitions, multi-state and cross-sector alliances, library and cultural-heritage networks, STEM and workforce ecosystems, energy and industry alliances, and other multi-organization initiatives. The common thread: a group of independent partners who need to move together, and a recognition that genuine alignment has to be built with members, not handed to them. And when a coalition’s own leaders want to build their facilitation capacity, we’ll coach them to design and run their convenings themselves.
